What the Kelvin number means
Lighting specifications use correlated color temperature, or CCT, to describe the apparent color of white light. The value is written in kelvins with a capital K and no degree symbol.
In practical display terms, lower CCT values lean toward candlelight and incandescent warmth. Higher values move toward a cleaner, icier or blue-white appearance. Brightness is measured separately, commonly in lumens.
A practical range guide
The boundaries below are useful design ranges, not universal product names. Manufacturers may label nearby values differently, so the printed CCT is more useful than the color name on the box.
- About 2,400–2,800 KExtra-warm or golden white. It reads closest to candlelight and older incandescent holiday lights.
- About 2,700–3,200 KWarm white. A traditional choice for brick, wood, greenery, gold accents and residential rooflines.
- About 3,500–4,500 KNeutral to pure white. It reduces the golden cast while staying less blue than daylight-style whites.
- About 5,000–6,500 KCool white. It can support icy, silver, blue or high-contrast modern designs.
How to choose a white for your property
Start with the materials and colors already present. Warm whites often complement red brick, natural stone, wood, greenery and classic red-and-gold décor. Neutral whites can bridge warm architecture and cooler accents. Cool whites tend to read sharper beside blue, silver and snow-themed décor.
Then test the sample where it will actually be used. Ambient street lighting, wall color, greenery and camera white balance can all change how a white appears. A daytime product photo is not a reliable substitute for viewing the bulb after dark on the property.

Why two bulbs with the same Kelvin value can look different
CCT reduces a complex light spectrum to one useful number. Two sources can share a nominal CCT and still differ slightly toward green, pink or another tint. Optics, bulb finish and nearby surfaces also affect perception.
That is why professional matching uses both the specification and an eyes-on sample. The number narrows the field; the side-by-side nighttime test makes the final decision.
